New Delhi: Ustad Zakir Hussain, a virtuoso of the tabla, handed away on December 15 on the age of 73 on account of heart-related illnesses in a San Francisco hospital. Tributes have been pouring in from throughout the globe as followers, artists, and public figures bear in mind the enduring musician.

Col Rajyavardhan Rathore shared an image on X and wrote, “Ustad Zakir Hussain’s extraordinary mastery of the tabla has created a timeless legacy on the planet of music. My deepest condolences to his household, buddies, and the numerous admirers whose lives he touched together with his artistry. His rhythms will echo in our hearts eternally.”

Congress chief Jyotiraditya Scindia shared a clip of the maestro in motion, reflecting on his unparalleled artistry.

“Zakir Hussain Ji’s tabla spoke a common language, transcending borders, cultures and generations. This clip defines how we are going to bear in mind him, and have fun his legacy. The sound & vibrations of his rhythm will echo in our hearts eternally. सदैव गूंजेगा, वाह ताज! My deepest condolences to his household, followers and family members. Om Shanti,” he wrote.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “The passing away of Ustad Zakir Hussain Sahab leaves our world of tradition poorer. Making his fingers dance on the dayan and bayan, he took Indian Tabla to the worldwide stage and can all the time be synonymous with its intricate rhythms. A doyen of music, a stalwart of creativity whose works endeared him to folks throughout generations. His passing leaves a void that shall be arduous to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his household, disciples and numerous admirers.”

Remembering Zakir Hussain

Recognized for infusing his tabla’s voice into world genres, Zakir Hussain acquired prestigious honors, together with the Padma Shri (1988), the Padma Bhushan (2002), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1990). In 1999, he earned the Nationwide Heritage Fellowship, America’s highest recognition for conventional artists.

Past Indian classical music, Zakir Hussain has ventured into various musical genres, collaborating with famend artists from world wide. From jazz legends like John McLaughlin and Mickey Hart to modern musicians like Bela Fleck, his collaborations have transcended cultural boundaries.

A life companion in rhythm, Zakir Hussain married Italian-American Kathak dancer Antonia Minnecola in 1978, mixing two worlds of artwork. The couple raised two daughters whereas enriching the cultural cloth globally.
